Research into Genres

The genre we are exploring is Indie/Rock

Indie rock is a genre of rock music that originally came from the United States and the United Kingdom in the 1980s. The Indie term is often used to describe music for the independent underground companies which distribute music with a difference.

"Indie rock artists are known for having complete control of their music and careers, releasing albums on independent record labels (sometimes self-owned and they manage their own work) and relying on touring, word-of-mouth, airplay on independent or college radio stations, and in recent years, the Internet for promotion."

"Indie rock became a 'separate movement' when Nirvana broke into the mainstream along with several other bands, taking the "alternative" label with them. The term indie rock soon became the accepted name for these bands who fell outside mainstream grunge and wanted to have a more 'underground' sub genre of alternative music more like the college rock movement which was established."

Indie Rock Bands

The Aislers Set
The Album Leaf
Aleutian
Alfie
Cash Audio
The Cassettes
The Dears
Death By Chocolate
Death Cab For Cutie
Fin Fang Foom
Crooked Fingers
Fireside

All of these bands / artists fit into the 'alternative' genre and have complete control of their music. These bands are not known worldwide, but hope that by word of mouth and playing at small festivals, their music will grow.

The conventions for an indie video would be:

That Indie music videos are normally shot as a live performance, performing on a stage.

The structure is purely performance based.

Quick cuts to the beat of the music

Singing directly to the camera

Numerous close up shots of the instruments such as the guitar and drums

Minimal characters used in the video other than the band members
